GISPB’s 2023 Language Day is right around the corner! This year we are inviting the students to use a global mindset to think about the different ways that people communicate with each other. Our learning community has much linguistic diversity and if we humbly attempt to understand one another then we can learn to appreciate how every language and culture is special in their own way. Together we can create a world where all languages, accents and dialects are respected, valued and cared for.

The students are invited to take part in one (or all four) of GISPB’s Language Week Challenges. The best submissions will receive a special prize!

1. Sign language ABC’s手語ABC

a. Imagine a world without spoken language. How could we communicate with one another? Some people use special gestures to say Hello, Goodbye and I love you. Memorize the Sign Language ABC’s song then record yourself signing all 26 letters. 想象一個(gè)沒有口語的世界。我們?nèi)绾位ハ嘟涣?有些人用特殊的手勢說你好，再見和我愛你。熟記手語ABC的歌曲，然后錄下自己的26個(gè)手語字母。

3. Idiom Comics成語漫畫

a. Have you ever heard the phrase, “it’s a small world” or “it’s raining cats and dogs?” Create a comic using the provided template to help explain these common English idioms.您是否聽過“這是一個(gè)小世界”或“傾盆大雨”這樣的說法？使用提供的模板創(chuàng)建漫畫來幫助解釋這些常見的英語習(xí)語。

4. Code Breakers密碼破解者

a. Did you know the ancient Egyptians used a complex system of drawn pictures to tell stories and record their history? While our school doesn’t have any ancient Egyptians foreign teachers, a special code has been posted on the FT office wall that is ready to be cracked by the students. If you are feeling up to it, you can create your own alphabet and code for the FT’s to decipher! 您知道埃及人使用復(fù)雜的繪畫系統(tǒng)來講述故事和記錄他們的歷史嗎？雖然我們學(xué)校沒有古埃及外教，但FT辦公室的墻上貼了一個(gè)特殊密碼，等待學(xué)生破解。如果您愿意，您可以創(chuàng)建自己的字母表和代碼供英國《金融時(shí)報(bào)》破譯！

At school the staff are preparing a celebration.

On our school’s giant display board, students and teachers can join together to learn and then write the word “friend” in one of our world’s many languages. How many languages can you use to make a new friend?

Each morning during homeroom time, a song from a different language will be played. The students will be asked to guess the language.

Throughout the week, Duty students will check classrooms for teachers teaching in English and Chinese (or another language!) Points and prizes awarded to the best teachers.

When parents come to visit our school for our UOI exhibitions, student reporters will be at the gate to ask parents to say a phrase in another language as they enter and to ask parents as to how many languages they know.
